Rollover Budget in PocketGuard: How It Works and How to Set It Up

Your grocery budget probably swings between “way under” one month and “completely blown” the next. Rollover budgets are basically built for that problem: instead of resetting to zero every month, leftover money carries forward and so does overspending, for better or worse.

What it actually does

Underspend a category, and the extra gets tacked onto next month’s amount for that same category. Overspend, and the difference comes off next month instead. Nothing disappears, nothing gets “wasted”, it just shifts.

A few places this comes in handy:

Seasonal stuff — clothing for the next season, school supplies, summer trips. Set aside a bit each month and let it build before the bill actually shows up.

Annual budgets — divide your yearly total by 12, and rollover tells you whether you’re ahead or behind pace without you having to do the math yourself.

Sinking funds — make a category purely for a savings goal. Skip spending from it, and the balance just keeps climbing until you’re ready to use it. Spend from it early, and you can adjust later months to catch up.

How to enable the rollover for category budgets?

If you’ve already got category budgets set up, switching on rollover takes a few taps:

  1. Open the “Spending & Budgets” section on your Dashboard
  2. Pick the category you want
  3. Tap the “…” icon in the top right corner
  4. Select “Enable rollover”

You’ll see a small icon appear next to that category afterward, and “Left to spend” changes to “Left to rollover”, that’s how you know any unused funds will carry into next month.

If you’re setting up a new category budget instead, there’s a toggle right under the amount field: “Make this budget a monthly rollover.” Turn it on and leftover funds roll forward from the start.

How to reset the rollover feature?

Sometimes you just want a clean slate, maybe the carried-over amount no longer fits your new budget, or you’d rather not bring it forward at all. To reset rollover for a category:

  1. Open the “Spending & Budgets” section on your Dashboard
  2. Pick the category with rollover enabled
  3. Tap the “…” icon in the top right corner
  4. Select “Reset rollover”

How to delete the rollover budget?

Decided rollover isn’t for a particular category anymore? Turning it off is just as quick:

  1. Open the category budget
  2. Tap the “…” button in the top right corner
  3. Choose Edit Budget
  4. Toggle rollover off
  5. Hit Save

How does the rollover calculation work?

Rollover (last month) + Budget (this month) − Spent (this month) + Earned (this month) = Left to rollover

So: whatever carried over (good or bad), plus this month’s budget, minus what got spent, plus any income tied to that category.

What happens if I overspend in a category? Does the overspending roll over?

Yes, if you overspend, the extra amount will roll over to next month, but it will affect your budget negatively. You’ll start with a deficit, meaning you’ll have less money to spend in that category next month.

Let’s say you overspend by $100 this month in your entertainment budget. That $100 will roll over as a negative amount into the next month, reducing the budget available for entertainment.

Example 1: Overspending

Imagine you budget $500 for entertainment this month, but you end up spending $600. You overspend by $100, which will be rolled over and subtracted from next month’s budget.

  • Rollover (Last Month): $0 (you had no leftover money)
  • Budget (This Month): $500
  • Spent (This Month): $600
  • Earned (This Month): $0
  • Rollover (Next Month): $500 + $0 – $600 + $0 = – $100

This means that next month, instead of starting with your usual $500 budget for entertainment, you’ll begin with $400 ($500 – $100 deficit).

Example 2: Underspending

Let’s say you budget $500 for groceries this month but only spend $400. The leftover $100 will be added to next month’s grocery budget, giving you more to spend.

  • Rollover (Last Month): $0
  • Budget (This Month): $500
  • Spent (This Month): $400
  • Earned (This Month): $0
  • Rollover (Next Month): $500 + $0 – $400 + $0 = $100

Next month, you’ll have an extra $100 for groceries.

How does the rollover budget affect the Leftover calculation?

If you didn’t spend the allocated funds last month, those funds will carry over into your budgets for the next month. As a result, your Leftover will increase by the rollover amount, giving you more available funds to spend in the upcoming month.

Example:

Month 1:

  • Income: $5000
  • Expenses: $3000 (you had a budget of $4000)
  • Goals: $1000
  • Leftover Money: $0
  • Rollover Balance: +$1000 (since you didn’t spend $1000, this amount rolls over to next month)

Month 2:

  • Rollover Balance: +$1000 (added from last month)
  • Income: $5000
  • Expenses: $4000 (same budget)
  • Goals: $1000
  • Leftover Money: $1000 (you have $1000 leftover this month)
  • IMP: $1000 (your available funds increase by the rollover amount)

In this scenario, since you didn’t spend all your allocated funds in Month 1, you carry over $1000 to Month 2. This gives you a total of $1000 more to spend this month.

Quick answers

Overspent with rollover on? The overage becomes a negative balance next month for that category.

Rollover and Leftover are connected — unspent money from last month goes straight into this month’s Leftover number.

Want to stop using rollover on a category? Edit Budget, toggle it off, save. Done.

Rollover works for sinking funds too — set up a category, turn rollover on, and any month you don’t touch it, the balance grows. Good for things like car repairs or yearly subscriptions that don’t fit neatly into a monthly budget.

This feature needs PocketGuard Plus — you can upgrade directly in the app if you don’t have it yet.
