Hashtags in PocketGuard help you track specific types of expenses across different categories. You can use them to analyze spending on hobbies, habits, events, or any custom grouping that matters to you.
When should I use hashtags?
Hashtags are useful when your spending is spread across multiple categories but relates to one activity or goal.
For example, if you practice yoga, your expenses may include:
- sportswear
- yoga classes
- equipment like a yoga mat
These purchases appear in different categories, making it harder to track total spending. By adding a hashtag like #yoga to each transaction, you can see your total monthly spending on yoga in one place.
How to add hashtags?
- Choose a transaction;
- Hit on the notes field;
- Type a hashtag;
- Hit “Save” in the upper right corner.
Once added, the hashtag becomes searchable and trackable across the app.
How to track expenses using hashtags
To view hashtag reports:
- Go to Insights
- Open the #Hashtags section
- Select a hashtag
- Choose a month to analyze your spending
You’ll see:
- total spending for that hashtag
- a visual breakdown
- comparisons with previous months
You can also:
- tap a hashtag directly in a transaction
- search by hashtag in the Transactions tab
Example: tracking specific spending habits
Let’s say you buy coffee regularly. Most purchases go into the Coffee Shops category.
But occasionally, you buy a more expensive drink, like a Pumpkin Spice Latte. This can push your category over budget without a clear reason.
By tagging those purchases with #PSL, you can:
- isolate that specific habit
- track how much it costs monthly
- better understand where overspending happens
Why hashtags are useful
Hashtags give you more control over how you analyze spending. Instead of relying only on categories, you can create your own tracking system based on your lifestyle and goals.
